This CD brings together, for the very first time, the complete works Iannis Xenakis composed for solo cello '+ 1', hommage to the 10th anniversary of his death. The music illustrates the evolution of a unique compositional trajectory, inspired by energeia, the active creative force of Greek thought, making things to what they are.

Arne Deforce
Arne Deforce is gekend om zijn gedreven en gepassioneerde interpretaties van hedendaagse en experimentele muziek. Zijn inventieve programma’s onderzoeken nieuwe muzikale expressievormen waarin vooral een ontmoeting met ‘het andere’ van het instrument en het onbevangen creatieve luisteren zelf centraal staan.
Hij concentreert zich voornamelijk op het solo- en kamermuziekrepertoire, met een specialisatie in de zogenaamde ‘onspeelbare’ maar wel ‘uitvoerbare’ werken van bv. Iannis Xenakis, Richard Barrett, John Cage, Brian Ferneyhough.
Hij is actief als improvisator met live-elektronica en in mixed-media performances met o.m. Peter Jacquemyn, Mikka Vaino, Phil Niblock, Visual Kitchen en werkte projecten uit met Centre Henri Pousseur Liège, Ircam Paris en Gram Lyon. Zijn artistieke invraagstelling van verworven luisterattitudes leidde tevens tot regelmatige samenwerkingen met componisten als Jonathan Harvey, Hector Parra, Wolfgang Rihm en Helmut Lachenmann.
Talrijke composities werden voor hem geschreven door o.m Richard Barrett, Luc Brewaeys, Kee-Yong Chong, Raphael Cendo, Alvin Curran, Phil Niblock, Lorenzo Pagilei, Ruben Sverre Gjertsen.
Arne Deforce is tevens actief in de ensembles Champ d'Action, Ictus en heeft een duo met pianist Daan Vandewalle. In 2002-2004 was hij ‘artist in residence’ aan het Concertgebouw Brugge. Van 2005 tot 2010 was hij tevens artistiek directeur van het Centre Henri Pousseur.
Hij speelt sinds jaren op de belangrijkste nieuwe muziek festivals (Ars Musica, Holland Festival, Agora Paris, Archipel Genève, Musica Strassbourg, Mito, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Amsterdamse Cellobiënale). Hij trad op als solist met o.a. het BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid, Brussels Philharmonic, Ensemble Musik Fabrik en werkte samen met de dirgenten Peter Eötvos, Martin Brabbins, James Wood, José Ramón Encinar, Michel Tabachnik.
Zijn goed onthaalde discografie - met werken van Jonathan Harvey (Megadisc), Phil Niblock (Touch), Giacinto Scelsi, Morton Feldman en recent de opname van de complete werken voor cello solo '+1' van Iannis Xenakis (Aeon) - kreeg grote internationale belangstelling (5 Diapson d'or, Coupe de coeur Académie Charles Cros, Prijs Caecilia 2012). Nieuwe opnames met werk van Richard Barrett, Brian Ferneyhough en Luciano Berio zijn in voorbereiding.
Arne Deforce geeft lecture-performances, doceert muziekgeschiedenis en kamermuziek aan het Conservatorium van Brugge en bereidt een doctoraat voor over de uitvoeringspraktijk van Complexity-music aan de universiteit van Leiden en het Orpheus-Instituut Gent.

Arne Deforce est connu pour ses interprétations passionnées et convaincantes de la musique contemporaine et expérimentale. Il se concentre principalement sur le répertoire solo et de musique de chambre, avec une spécialisation dans les partitions soi-disant ‘injouables’ mais bien ‘exécutables’, comme dans les œuvres de Iannis Xenakis, Richard Barrett, John Cage, Brian Ferneyhough.

Arne Deforce is renowned for his passionate and unparalleled perfomances of contemporary and experimental music.
